Just as we have a Mother Earth, Yemaya is our Mother Ocean. This primordial Goddess encompasses all the oceans and seas of the world, as well as the depths of feminine mystery inside of us.

In the Yoruba tradition, the people of the Ifa faith know her as Yemoja, said to mean Mother of Fish. She is honoured as an ancient Orisha, having existed from almost the beginning of time and is said to have birthed all forms of creation. She is a protectress; of all women, children, and all that concern them. 

Although she is so often seen as gentle and maternal to many of her followers, it is often forgotten that she a force to be reckoned with. She is all aspects of the ocean: the gentle lap of the water on the shore, the relaxing lull of the waves; and the roar and power of tidal waves and tsunamis, the darkest depths of the ocean. 

Yemaya pulls us back to the nurturing care of the mother: she offers peace and powerful protection for those that honour her, as well as healing and abundance.
