Oya  is the goddess of wind, storms, and change, a dominant orisha in Yoruba mythology, revered for her tremendous transformative power, protective abilities, and tempestuous nature. She is also sometimes known as the gatekeeper of the dead. Often she is depicted as a warrior, carrying either her whip and machete, or her twin swords. Her life force resides in the river Niger. In some versions of Yoruba mythology, Oya was born a mortal woman and became a goddess after she died, deified due to her incredible powers. She is a fierce protector of women, and she played an crucial part in the Yoruba revolution and emancipation from slave traders. Oya’s association with the wind, storms, and hurricanes accentuates her extreme transformative power. As wind blows and disrupts the environment, it corresponds to personal growth and change.
