Many are familiar with the myth of Medusa: she was a prized priestess of the Goddess Athena. A remarkably beautiful woman completely devoted to serving her Goddess, she took her vows of chastity very seriously, content with her life spent honouring her lady. The sea god Poseidon became obsessed with her beauty: she became the involuntary subject of his lust and he eventually raped her in Athena's sacred temple.
The story we have been fed tells us that Athena, furious with Medusa for disrespecting her vows and defiling her temple, cursed the woman to become a fearsome monster as a punishment; with snakes for hair and a gaze that would turn anyone to stone.
But was it an actual punishment? Perhaps Athena's transformation of Medusa was not a curse but a gift. Instead of the Goddess punishing Medusa out of rage for sullying her temple, for being too beautiful and 'leading on' Poseidon, she bestows upon her protection so that no man may ever even look her in the eye again, so that no man would ever be tempted to touch her again. Instead of veiling Medusa in shame for an act she could not control, Athena instead gifts her with freedom: freedom to rage, freedom to punish, as much freedom as a goddess can give a woman.

It helps us battle the shame wrongfully enforced on us, and helps us return it to where it belongs. It helps us connect with this sacred goddess, Medusa, so she can show us how to be powerful, strong, untouchable, in spite of what happened to us.
This spray is our Athena: it is our freedom to be angry. It is our freedom to reclaim our power back from those who unrightfully took it.
