Ceres, or Demeter in Greek Mythology, was the mother of Persephone (Proserpina.)
A central part of Ceres’s mythos involved the abduction of her daughter Proserpina (Persephone to the Greeks) by the Underworld god Pluto (Hades to the Greeks). Many Roman authors, including Ovid and Claudian, adapted older Greek traditions to tell of how Ceres searched far and wide for Proserpina after her disappearance. In her despair, she allowed all the plants and fertile fields to die, until eventually Hecate told her where her daughter was, how she had been ravished by Ceres's own brother, Pluto, and that he still held her in captivity in the Underworld.
Though Ceres eventually learned of her daughter’s fate, she was unable to fully rescue her. Jupiter (Zeus) decided that Proserpina made a good match for Pluto, and decreed that Proserpina would be allowed to spend part of the year with her mother, but she had to spend the rest of the year in the Underworld with her husband Pluto. Thus began or seasons of winter and summer. During the warmer months, Proserpina spends her time above ground, tending to the crops and fertile earth alongside her mother. And during the colder months, she stays in the Underworld with her husband, and Ceres allows the plant world to slumber in her grief and loneliness.
Ceres was first and foremost a Goddess of grain and agriculture. Her association with farming and the land—and her role in ensuring fertility and bountiful harvests—was evident from her close connection with Mother Earth.
Ceres was counted from early on as one of the “Twelve Gods". She was also closely connected with the realm of the dead.
This spray was created for those women (or men) who deal with a difficult relationship with their mother, and/or with their child. The loss of one or both of those important people can be so very devastating to process. This loss can be one of a physical nature or of an emotional disconnect.
It can also be used on an ancestral altar, around your house plants, or in your garden (not directly on the plants) to give a blessing from the Goddess of the Harvest.
